表現的な間違い

不定冠詞・定冠詞の理解

以下の英文は正しい?正しいとすると違いが分かるか?

  • This is the map I borrowed from Bill.
  • This is a map I borrowed from Bill.

次はこれ.

  • We took the eight o’clock train bound for Osaka.
  • We took an eight o’clock train bound for Osaka.

名詞に修飾語が付くと「特定化(限定化)される」ので定冠詞theを付ける必要がある,とのイメージがあればそれは誤解.「唯一それに決まる」というのが「特定化」の意味するところ.修飾句が付いても名詞が特定化されないことも多々ある.では関係詞はどうか?

関係詞の制限用法・非制限用法の違い

制限用法は後ろから訳す,非制限用法の場合は前から訳す…まさかそんな風に思っていないですよね?

  • The Nobel Prize which I received last year was a great honor(制限用法).
  • The Nobel Prize,  which I received last year was a great honor (非制限用法).

この2つは意味が異なる.

  • (以前にもノーベル賞を受賞したことがあるだが)昨年受賞したノーベル賞はとても光栄でした.
  • 昨年受賞したノーベル賞はとても光栄でした.

2つ文はニュアンスがかなり違うことに注意.もう一つ例題.

  • He has two daughters who are studying music(彼は音楽を勉強している娘が二人いる(音楽を勉強していない娘がいるかもしれない)).
  • He has two daughters, who are studying music(彼は娘が二人いて,二人とも音楽を勉強している).
